Did you miss me? I missed you – once you get in the habit of creating a daily set of links, you do get a bit used to the process. At the moment, there are thousands of unread stories in my RSS reader, waiting eagerly to be chosen as Signal worthy. To the round up of several days of overlooked linkology:
f8: A New Class of Apps (Facebook) A very big set of announcements from Facebook. The second day analysis is not out yet, but I sense this move may well prove unimportant. Lost in it all is the Open Graph changes, which I think, at first blush, is the real news. It’s now far, far easier to push information into the Facebook platform. I am not sure the world is ready for that. I’ll stay on top of it. Meanwhile, a lot more folks have things to say about the news:
Sorry Facebook, But That Stuff I Share on Your Site is Not the “Story of My Life” (Sfilter) I understand his POV. I have not come down on his side yet, however.
Facebook Gets in the App Discovery Game with “Graph Rank” (ATD) Bet they won’t help you find an Android app.
Google+ Suddenly Looks Pretty Busy for a Ghost Town (Wired) The day before Facebook announced its big news, Google opened the service to everyone. And made a big point of telling us about it (see image).
Google+: 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99… 100. (Google) The official post about new Google+ features. As I said in my post, this is the digital mortar between all Google offerings, a shift in what the Google brand means….more soon.
Google Gives Display Ads a Social Edge, Adds +1 Button (CZ) I wonder if this is going to work. Suppose it can’t hurt.
Senate Grills Google’s Eric Schmidt on Market Dominance (CZ) I could not imagine Larry Page up there. This is why Eric is still connected to Google, so he can handle stuff like this.
Who is hurt by the Google+ “real names” policy? A summary. (TechnoSocial) I gave a few talks at major agencies this week after Signal Chicago. I got the question of “real names” twice. Smart question. Here’s a smart answer.
Everybody Says They Hate Google, But Why Don’t They Show It? (AdAge) The author makes a point. There’s a lot of Google FUD, but the money goes where the money goes.
It’s Official: Meg Whitman Named HP CEO; Apotheker Out; Lane Is Exec Chairman (ATD) Wow. I’ve asked Meg to come to Web 2, though i doubt that will happen given how new this all is.
Hulu has more than 1 million paying subscribers: CEO (Reuters) Hmmm, anyone wonder why this stat came out …. now? As the bidding war for the company seems to be slowing down? Or perhaps, intensifying? Hard to know.
Signal: Chicago is a wrap, join us Oct 25th for the FM Debrief (FM) Three solid conferences, a hundred speakers, one thirty minute summary next month.
Media companies revisit their AOL days with Facebook (GigaOm) Solid points.
Tablet Shipments Exceeding Forecasts; Still Apple’s Game To Lose (PC) And mark my words, over time, lose they will. At least, market share, that is!
The Promise of the Web (AlertDebugging) I don’t know who this guy is but I love what he’s saying.
Next Step Infinity (Edge) Because it’s Friday.
